Wedding Chakras
Sanjita weds Akash circa 2016. A wedding in the family, in the winter chill that is unique to Kolkatta. Where the energetic baaraat of the Marwari groom was welcomed with blowing of the conch by married women on the Bengali bride’s side, as tradition would have it, “to ward off the evil eye”. A particularly appealing custom of a typical Bengali wedding dictates that the bride comes in much later, her beautiful face covered with two leaves, hoisted on the shoulders of her brothers and is taken around the groom 7 times before they take their vows at the traditional “pheras”.
Circles of Fire
Procheta weds Sakshi circa 2019. This wedding held early evening witnessed a subtle mix of two cultures from across the country. The Bengali groom’s aunt organised a cultural program for the guests with a group of young girls, trained in Rabindra Sangeet and Bengali folk song and dance. The Maharashtrian bride’s family and guests sat enthralled before they were treated to a typical Bengali wedding feast for dinner.
