Glass, mirrors and steel create a heady cocktail of reflections, which leads one to wonder “Which side of the glass was the photographer standing upon? Was she inside the cafe? Or outside? And where are the cars parked?”

It’s exactly this magic that marks much of Joyeeta’s work. In this photo, the photographer is standing outside the cafe, looking into the cafe, where a man at the bar sits near a row of glasses. Behind the photographer is the exterior of the cafe with a hotel and parked cars. These form a reflection on the glass of the cafe, leading to a delicious play of light and reflections, edited just enough to enhance the sharpness of the photo and set its white balance right.

Reflections of a peaceful mind

Angkor Wat is a large temple complex in Cambodia and its very construction, juxtaposed with the calm demeanor and simple robes of this monk presented a fantastic photo-op. This temple complex is said to be the largest religious monument in the world by land area and is now considered a Hindu-Buddhist temple. It has many doors that when seen through the eyes of Joyeeta, symbolises the cycle of reincarnation. Just as we pass through multiple doors in our busy daily routine, the soul too goes through multiple rebirths, each being a reflection of where we have been before. This liet motif of reflections is often seen in her work. The walls of the temple have a rich, textured look with bas-reliefs and the wooden door frame that the monk walks through frames his silhouette perfectly.
The delta offers the perfect opportunity for tourists to experience the many waterways of Vietnam. The narrow route is wide enough only for two boats at a time and often, boats have to wait their turn before going up the river. This photo is rich in colour and texture, almost painting-like. The blue colour of the boat and the surroundings stand out while the reddish flush on the boatwoman’s cheeks, while she steers her boat, matches the rose tones of the picture. The river network in Vietnam is almost 2000-strong and form a lifeline for business and tourism in Vietnam.
